Adversity Alchemy: A Multi-Racial, Multi-Spiritual Playlist for Collective Liberation
First published on the previous version of our website on February 5, 2025.
Music has always been a portalāturning grief into power, exhaustion into momentum, and pain into something that fuels us forward.
As a trauma-agile⢠and liberatory leadership coach and consultant, Iāve long used music as a tool for transmuting pain into strength, for myself and those I guide. In the aftermath of the horrific 2024 election results, I leaned into this practice once again, creating a sonic incantation to alchemize the collective grief, rage, and urgency into something usable, grounding, and empowering.
I drew from the sounds that have sustained meāmusic rooted in my multi-racial, multi-ethnic, and interspiritual heritages. I carefully curated tracks from my most sacred and potent personal and private client playlists.
This isnāt just about one political moment. This is about adversity itselfāthe kind that my Black, Indigenous, and Jewish ancestors, and likely yours, have endured and transmuted (in various ways, with varying levels of success) for generations. The kind that oppressed peoples have always innovated ways to survive, resist, and thrive beyond the limitations of the collective consciousness of their times.
This isnāt just a playlist. Itās an ancestrally- and movement-rooted toolkit for not just turning hardship into power, grief into clarity, and despair into action, but also a musical curriculum of strategies and insights we can learn from and integrate into skillfully building a better world. š¶š„
Weaving Together Ancestry Through Sound
Every song on this playlist was chosen with intentionāa reflection of the cultures, struggles, and triumphs that live in my blood and shape my work.
This playlist is interspiritual, intergenerational, and deeply personal. Some tracks pull from the soul and gospel traditions that nurtured my great-grandmother Emmaās faith as a Black woman pastoring a small church in Turkey, North Carolina. Some come from the rhythms of hip-hop and R&B, which have always been a soundtrack of resistance and resilience. Others draw from artists across nations, ethnicities, and diasporasāall singing songs of longing, survival, and the fierce insistence on life.
At its core, this playlist is rooted in the reality that our struggles are interconnectedābut so is our liberation.
Creatively Weaving a Soundtrack for Liberation
This isnāt a playlist of just any songs. Every single track is intentional. Itās an intersectional, interspiritual, multi-racial weave of personal and collective powerāa mix that speaks to grit, faith, fire, joy, and liberatory strategies.
Some of the songs? I remix in my own mind. Not every lyric fits my values as-is, but music is meant to be reinterpreted, reclaimed, and reimagined.
Some examples:
š¤ Commonās "Speak My Piece" becomes "Speak My Peace"āturning a claim to dominance into a visionary insistence on inner and shared sovereignty.
š¶ Angel Hazeās "Werkinā Girls" transforms into:
"Love and social change is the only sht Iām after...*
Iām on top of social change like a motherf**ing tractor...
You cowards ābout to be finished, you liars ābout to be Casper."
And then thereās Samm Henshawās "Church," which makes me think of my great-grandmotherās church. But in my understanding, "Church" is any sacred spaceāincluding our own hearts, nature, and the places where we gather in love and liberation.
This playlist isnāt just something to listen to. Itās something to live with.
